Frequently Asked Questions
Teak
- Where does the teak come from?
- Plantation teak.
- Which teak is the best, Burmese or Javanese?
- Both are excellent timbers with similar qualities. However, the key to producing quality teak furniture is selecting only the core of the trunk for manufacture, appropriate kilning of the timber for our climatic conditions, and close attention to detail during the production process. Only if these steps are followed can the true quality of teak, regardless of origin, be realised.
- Why is there such a difference in colour?
- Some plantations have different soil compositions that can cause colour variation. The oil content in the timber can also vary from plantation to plantation. All unoiled teak will fade to a silver grey colour over time when exposed to rain and sun.
- Why is your teak furniture more expensive than so and so's?
- We take great care selecting and preparing timber for our furniture. For example, we use only the core of the trunk that accounts for about 30% of the log. The timber is then kiln dried to 10-12% water content. All joints are mortise and tenon. We continuously fine sand all our furniture to achieve a smooth finish. We have over 24 years experience designing and manufacturing quality teak furniture and have a reputation to uphold.
- So and so says their teak is the best - who do I believe?
- We have over 24 years experience providing our customers with teak furniture and developed a reputation for product quality and customer service. Ultimately, you have to make your own evaluation and judgement.
- How do I look after teak?
- Teak will weather slowly over time and does not require constant maintenance. We recommend cleaning the furniture, particularly the table top with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and dowsing with clean water every few weeks or as required.
- Do I have to oil teak to preserve it?
- Oiling teak furniture will certainly help to preserve teaks natural colour. As far as preserving the timber is concerned, regularly applying oil will not add significantly to the life of the timber.
- When should I oil my furniture and how often?
- The first application should not be applied for at least 8 weeks after receiving furniture. Ensure that timber is very dry before oiling. Depending on climatic conditions, oil once a year or when appropriate.
- What oil should I use?
- Use only quality outdoor furniture teak oil from a reputable brand and follow instructions carefully.
- How should I apply the oil?
- Ensure the furniture is clean and very dry before applying oil with a clean paintbrush or rag. Again, ensure furniture is very dry before oiling.
- Will oiling darken the colour of the furniture?
- Yes. It will acquire a rich honey colour that will lighten up over time as the fading process commences again.
- How do I remove stains?
- Wet affected area first and scrub with warm soapy water using a soft scrubbing brush. Repeat process if necessary and dowse with clean water when finished. If necessary, lightly sand with light grade paper.
- Should I cover the table during winter to protect it?
- We do not recommend covering the table as this can encourage mould in certain climatic conditions.
- My table has turned grey, what do I do to return it to its original colour?
- Remove the greyness by using a wood cleaner and lightly sand the surface. Clean table and allow to dry thoroughly if you intend to apply oil.
- Can an umbrella hole be drilled in tables?
- Yes they can in any fixed table however, we do not recommend drilling umbrella holes in extention tables as this can significantly weaken the structure of the table top. We are happy to drill an umbrella hole in a fixed table for you prior to delivery if required.
- Why should I buy Teak for outdoors rather than other timbers?
- Teak has long been regarded as the ideal timber for outside use because of its natural oil content and its unique cell structure. It is most stable, does not rot easily and retains its smoothness even after long expose to the elements.
- How long is your warranty and what does it cover?
- We offer a five-year warranty on all our teak furniture subject to reasonable care and usage. We reserve the right to repair or replace furniture at our discretion.
Outdoor Wicker
- What is the synthetic material made from?
- Our Synthetic Cane outdoor furniture is made from a high quality synthetic material called ‘High Density Poly Ethylene' [HDPE] that is hand woven on to powder coated aluminium frames. This synthetic material is extremely long - lasting, weather proof, colourfast, chlorine resistant and UV stable.
- How do I clean Synthetic Cane?
- Regularly clean furniture with a damp cloth. For stubborn stains, use warm water with dishwashing liquid and wipe clean with a cloth. Rinse when finished.
- Where is it made?
- Asia.
- Is your Synthetic cane better than so and so's, if so, why?
- We always endeavour to source the highest quality material available to us. We insist on production being the highest possible standard from tighter material weaving, thicker aluminium frames and superior under seat support.
- Why do X store have similar looking chairs at a much cheaper price?
- They cater for a different market and therefore their furniture is made and priced for their particular market segment. We appeal to a more discerning market that value quality and after sales service.
- What is the life expectancy of the product?
- With reasonable care and maintenance one would expect the product to maintain its function and appearance for a good many years.
- Will it fade?
- Like everything exposed to the sun, fading will occur slowly over time. However, this material is the best available to us at this point in time.
- How long will it take before it starts to fade?
- Not sure. UV is stronger now than in the past however, having said that it should last many years. Put it this way, this material is the best we can get at this point in time.
- What is the warranty?
- We offer a two-year warranty for all our synthetic cane furniture provided the furniture has been reasonably cared for and maintained.
- What is the frame made of?
- Powder coated Aluminium that colour blends with the HDPE material.
