Caring For Teak

Jati Outdoor Teak - Care and Maintenance
Our outdoor teak furniture is manufactured to the highest standards and is equal to the best in the world. We manufacture our collection using government - controlled plantations on the island of Java, Indonesia and select only the highest grade of teak.
Teak is a dense wood and is extremely stable and resistant to decay even when exposed to extreme weather conditions. It is not necessary to treat quality teak. Left untreated, it will weather to a silver grey colour over time.
The greying process
The more teak is exposed to weather, and in particular the sun and rain, the quicker the greying process will occur. Teak should achieve a light grey colour within twelve to eighteen months of exposure. During the weathering process streaking may occur in protected areas which is normal. This means the natural oil in the timber is weathering unevenly and will take longer to grey. It helps to move furniture around so that all areas receive equal exposure resulting in a more even greying process. It is important to have extension tables fully extended as much as possible to ensure even weathering during the greying process.
Cleaning
Before cleaning furniture ensure it is thoroughly wet. Warm soapy water with a soft bristled scrubbing brush will remove most mottled or patchy environmental and man made stains including dead timber cells. Alternatively, a wood cleaner can be applied such as 'Feast Watson Wood Cleaner'. Simply follow the instructions for best results. For stubborn stains sand the area with a fine grade sand paper.
Extension Tables
The runner of the extension leaves need cleaning regularly to remove accumulated grime. Open the table and use a normal hose with the nozzle on high pressure to clean table frame and rails on the extension leaves. Use a brush to remove difficult built up grime. Following cleaning and extended periods of rain, the timber may swell and it could be difficult to move extension leaves. This is normal and upon drying they will move freely again.
Retaining teaks natural colour
There are a number of options available to retain the colour of new outdoor teak furniture and prevent the greying process. Before applying any finish, leave furniture exposed to the elements for six to eight weeks before applying any finish. If it has not rained during this period hose furniture twice weekly to remove dust and natural oil. This will also open the grain and allow the finish to penetrate timber pores more effectively.
As with all finishing applications it is very important that furniture is thoroughly cleaned and bone dry. It is recommended that following cleaning, furniture be left to dry in warm dry conditions for at least four days before applying a finish. Do not apply any finish to runners of extention tables.
Recommended finishing products
Feast Watson Outdoor Furniture Oil - Teak
Initially apply two coats with a brush and then one more coat two to three times a year as required. This product will give the furniture a darker teak colour.
Restoring Aged Furniture
To restore the colour of furniture that has aged considerably, we recommend sanding surfaces with a light to medium grade sand paper before cleaning and applying the desired finish.
Warranty
We offer a five-year warranty for all our outdoor teak furniture provided the furniture has been reasonably cared for and maintained. Should a problem arise during this warranty period, we reserve the right to repair or replace the item at our discretion.
